Getting a used RV inspected before you buy
An inspection can catch roof leaks, water damage and failing appliances before you pay. Mobile inspectors come to the seller.
What an inspection usually covers
- Roof, seals and signs of water damage in walls, ceilings and floors.
- Appliances: AC, furnace, fridge, water heater, stove and generator.
- Electrical systems, batteries, converter and inverter.
- Plumbing, tanks, water pump and propane system.
- Slide-outs, awnings, leveling jacks, tires and the hitch or chassis.
Ask what's included before you book. Some inspectors also test fluids or offer infrared and moisture-meter checks.
NRVIA certification
The National RV Inspectors Association trains and certifies RV inspectors. Certified inspectors follow a standard checklist and give you a written report. NRVIA offers different inspection levels, so ask which level you're getting.
Tips
- Book the inspection before you sign or pay a deposit.
- Ask the seller to have the RV plugged in, with propane and water connected.
- Use the report to negotiate or to plan repairs.
